Words from Betsy - O2 Pilates Director
Hi! If you have enough interest to hit the link button connecting you to find more information about Pilates, you have enough interest to take a class!
PILATES entered my world fifteen years ago, when I was living in NYC. A friend of mine was taking private lessons at a studio and I came along to watch. I saw an amazing gentleman in his eighties, moving with a strength, ease and fluidity I didn’t see in my own body. It was in this moment I made the decision to make PILATES part of my life. This work has changed the way I use my body as an actor, dancer, athlete and in general daily activity.
One wonderful quality of this work is in it’s application to other areas. Pilates works like a tune-up. A constant gardener for the well-tended body! Many books, DVD’s, group classes, you-tube links, etc are out there to try and self-instruct yourself. Take advantage of O2’s incredible price point for individual instruction. Book a private lesson, a duo or quad (quartet) and get highly personal attention, learning the form and precision of the exercises in detail. As of now, we are focusing on mat work, the foundational exercises upon which the work is housed. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn the PILATES work in a great space with teachers who are passionate about watching your growth!
Joseph Pilates has a great quote you see on every PILATES related website (for good reason):
"After 10 sessions you'll FEEL a difference, after 20 sessions you'll SEE a difference, and after 30 sessions you'll have a NEW BODY ". - J.H. Pilates
"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Ourinterpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenanceof a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally,easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily taskswith spontaneous zest and pleasure."
Information About the Work.
“lt is the mind itself which builds the body.”
The Pilates Method evolved from Joseph Pilates' technique of Contrology, or The Art of Control. He recognized that the brain controlled the mobility of the body. At the time there was very little emphasis on exercises melding the precision of the mind with the anatomical integrity of the muscles. He formulated a regimen that emphasized the development of the body in a uniform manner, correcting improper posture while invigorating the mind and elevating the spirit.
"Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit.Through Contrology you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then through proper repetition of its exercises you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities."
While the Pilates Method is effectively toning muscles, it is simultaneously working to produce a unity of body and mind. Pilates further described the goal of Contrology as;
“... the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body a sound mind and the ability to perform life's daily activities with zest and ease."
“lt is the mind itself which builds the body.”
